The date was September 23rd 1853. On that date 81 persons in Bridgeport CT, signed a Pledge to incorporate as an Ecclesiastical Society. This act was the founding of our Church. The Pledge made 165 years ago, by the 81, is a Pledge we at First Presby still honor. This October 28th our church will celebrate its 165th birthday. We are planning a Founders Day Sunday by honoring the 81 founding members from the 19th Century. Some of the historical figures who will be remembered include our first Minister, Dr. Nathaniel Hewit, first Elder Captain, John Brooks, Jr., Captain Burr Knapp, and Mary Bishop. The special Founders Day Sunday will include a retrospective worship service starting with the early days of the church in Bridgeport in 1853 to its present-day Fairfield location. Guest speakers, music by Fanny Crosby, a Victorian-era tea, and a special “remembrance drive” through Mountain Grove Cemetery will focus on the early days and will recognize founding members.
