Ghana Partnership

Maternity Ward Project in Ghana

First Presbyterian Church (FPC) is  spearheading a campaign  to build a maternity ward in Ghana.
We first got involved in Ghana by sending money to orphanages and medical outreaches. Then, with the help of PCUSA missionary and liaison, Rev. Josh Heikkila, we formalized a partnership with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana (EPC), sensing God’s call to come alongside them to address unmet needs in the Volta Region. The EPC has programs that support homeless children, farmers and fisherman, and patients in need of healthcare, but the needs are greater than their resources.

EPC pastors believe that a maternity ward at their Dzemeni medical clinic is a top priority. Dzemeni is a rural fishing town on the banks of Lake Volta. People travel great distances to go to its market and, while there, take advantage of the medical clinic. It provides basic screening and medical care for all in need. Currently, at least four births occur there every day, and mothers and babies share one very small recovery room. However, it is believed the number of births would double if there was a larger, betterequipped birthing facility onsite.

The EPC has shovel-ready architectural plans for this maternity ward. They have asked FPC to help raise funds to build and equip a ward and train its staff. We have spent more than a year working out the details with our PCUSA missionary and headquarters. We have a clear strategy for collecting donations, using the EPC’s established account at PCUSA, which receives donations, disburses funds, and requires reporting that demonstrates proper use of funds.

This maternity ward is an opportunity for us in America to help our brothers and sisters in Ghana meet the needs in their community. It’s family helping family. We hope you’ll partner with us on this life-giving project, as a longterm investment and a tangible expression of love.
