Reaching Out

Wakeman's Boys and Girls Club

We are proud to share our facilities with important groups from the community. We provide space for Wakeman's Boys and Girls Club After School Program. Wakeman Boys & Girls Club serves the needs of boys & girls grades 1 thru 12 in Fairfield, CT and surrounding communities. Wakeman is a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a national network made up of over 3,000 neighborhood clubs that reach over four million children & young adults. Through a number of activities, Boys & Girls Clubs help their members build self-esteem, acquire honest values & pursue productive futures. back to top

Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County

Many of our members play active roles with Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County, which has built homes for over 100 Bridgeport families. We organized the Presbyterian Coalition with six other Presbyterian Churches to sponsor and build homes for two families. Volunteer workers from First Presby work at Habitat the last two Saturdays of each month. Working together is a great way to get to know each other on a deeper level. Come join in the fun! back to top

Operation Hope

Every second Saturday of the month, our church members prepare meals for Operation Hope of Fairfield. This program provides a well-balanced hot meal for residents of the Operation Hope shelter. We cook for roughly 45 people using the commercial style kitchen at our church. We have been blessed with the necessary space to benefit those in need. back to top

Bridgeport Rescue Mission

Volunteers from First Presby help to serve hot meals from a van and distribute donated clothing to those in need. We also collect used clothing and non-perishable foods for the Rescue Mission, and support their fund-raising efforts. Periodically we meet with clients of the Bridgeport Rescue Mission for socialization and enrichment.

The Bridgeport Rescue Mission, located on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport, CT, provides the opportunity to glorify God by serving people in need, proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ, and making disciples among the poor and disadvantaged people. back to top

Project Learn Program of the Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport

We provide school supplies and support to the Project Learn Program. In 1969, The Council of Churches started a homework help program at a public housing project, currently known as Trumbull Gardens. To this day Project Learn opens the doors of inner-city Bridgeport community centers and churches after school Monday through Friday during the academic year. The focus of the program is encouraging, educating and enriching the lives of the enrolled children.

THE ANGEL TREE

We will be collecting gift items for 30 children in the Project Learn after-school program.

The Angel Tree will be by the office during the week and in Brooks Hall on Sundays. Stars on the Tree will give each child’s name, age, sex, the gift he/she would like and the store where you can find the item. There are several ways to help:

- Take one or more stars and bring that child’s present to a special basket in the office by Monday, December 15. Please attach the star to the present so that we know who is to get your gift.
- You may choose to contribute any amount that you feel comfortable with; we will then pool all contributions together and buy any missing gifts.
- Yet another way of participation is to donate batteries A, AA, AAA. A lot of these toys require batteries that most of the times are not included.
- And remember: These gifts will be picked up on Monday December 15.

Jennifer Tree

Following in the footsteps of Jennifer Bohnsack, the late teacher in our Nursery and Sunday schools, the “Jennifer Tree” drive is sponsored by the Mission Committee at Christmas time. This memorial tree is covered by donations of Hats, Gloves and Mittens that will benefit children. Look for the tree in the Narthex in early December. back to top

Covenant to Care

The congregation has entered into a covenant to provide assistance and support to specifically assigned individuals who are in the care of the State of Connecticut, Department of Social Services. Our church family has committed to accept the responsibility for 17 families. The Thanksgiving and Christmas drives for non-perishable food and gifts were overwhelmed by the support of First Presby.

CHRISTMAS FOOD DRIVE

At the end of this year, let us be thankful for all the blessings we receive from God! In this spirit, we will be doing a Christmas food basket for 10 families under the Covenant to Care for Children.

Items needed are:
Canned Hams, all kinds of non perishable foods – vegetables and fruits, rice, pasta- and let’s not forget special children’s treats.

Our baskets of love will be picked up on Sunday December 21st, so let us be generous and provide these 10 families with a good Christmas supper. During the week, you may deposit food items in blue baskets by the front office, on Sundays these baskets will be in the Narthex and Brooks Hall.

For further information, please contact any member of the Mission Committee.
